Decorative Surfaces Fellow – City & Guilds of London Art School 2022-23

Simon Bejer’s practice is steeped in the traditions of Western art history, maintaining a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and seductive materials. Born in Melbourne and based in London, he works across a broad range of media to explore and subvert past and present ideas of beauty, taste and the picturesque. His training and extensive experience in theatre design is evident in many aspects of my artistic practice, in particular the construction of spatial and material illusions and the creation of a sense of drama and suggested narrative. Play, wonder and absurdity are central to his approach, which also prizes the development of skill, material experimentation and decorative spectacle which the decorative surfaces fellowship gave him the opportunity to explore further and in greater depth.
