How to become a Member of the Company
There are two types of members of the Painter-Stainers' Company:
- Freemen
Working artist and crafts people.
A Freeman may progress on to Liveryman status.
- Liverymen
Liverymen are full members of our historical Company with exclusive rights to vote in the elections for the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of the City of London.
Liveryman status also allows possible progression to the Court Assistants and perhaps even eventually to the role of Master of the Company.
A Liveryman must first attain Company Freeman status.
Both Freemen and Liverymen are expected to support their company with their attendance, participation, and charitable endeavour. In return they enjoy fellowship with their fellow members, an opportunity to support their trade, craft or profession and enjoy the culture and heritage of the City of London.
Please note, the terms Freemen and Liverymen apply to all genders.
The membership of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers is made up of Liverymen and Freemen from all backgrounds and locations who unite in the shared interests of:
- Supporting platforms for artists, especially emerging artists
- Valuing education and continued learning
- Enjoying the fellowship of the Company Members and City of London community
The historic requirement of a connection to the City of London or a career in the Arts has been somewhat relaxed, and now instead, an eagerness to engage with both and participate in Company events is most welcome.
All applicants need to be proposed and seconded by two Liverymen of the Company.
However, should you not know a member of the Company, the Clerk would be happy to discuss your application with you.
All candidates must complete an application form and take part in an interview to ascertain suitability and enthusiasm for membership.
Membership includes an initial joining fee and an annual contribution- a lower rate ‘Service Charge’ for Freemen, and a higher rate ‘Quarterage’ for Liverymen.
Regular, smaller, donations to the Company are also encouraged, and donations to Company’s Charities always welcome.
For further information about membership of the Company please contact the Clerk’s Office.
